Okay, I know you're out there. I've met a few of you. Perhaps I haven't met you yet, but I intend to!
I'm talking about those of you who are proficient at playing a musical instrument, but hadn't thought about playing that instrument in church. In fact, I know in particular that we have at least one trumpeter and at least one violinist, with rumors of percussionists, a flautist, electric bassist, and maybe more.
Psalm 150 exhorts us to
Praise the LORD!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty expanse.
Praise Him for His mighty deeds;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness.
Praise Him with trumpet sound;
Praise Him with harp and lyre.
Praise Him with timbrel and dancing;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and pipe.
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD!
In these few verses alone, the psalmist mentions instruments (strings, brass, winds, and percussion), location, reasons, methods (music, words, and dancing) and participants (everything/everyone). Combine that with the other passages throughout the Bible on music in worship, and we get the message that if we can shout, sing, play, or dance, we should do so to the Lord and for His glory and praise.
So step right up and let me know who you are, either by posting a follow up here with your name and instrument, or catch me starting in January. Let's all make a joyful noise to the Lord!
